Holly Garber on Family, Fashion & Finding Balance
We’ve had Holly Garber on our wishlist for a long time. The beloved career coach and former PR agency founder opens up about motherhood, style, and the slower pace she’s now embracing — from life on a Mudgee farm to daily rituals that bring her joy.
Name: Holly Garber
Date of Birth: August 1980
Place of Birth: Sydney, Australia
Occupation: Career Coach
What are some of the challenges of being a working mother and how do you juggle it all?
The hardest part is switching off my work brain during family time. When I ran Golightly, my PR agency, the boundaries were harder to hold — managing clients and a team meant constant mental juggling. Now, as a consultant working from home, the flow feels more natural. I structure work for when the house is quiet — that’s when I focus best.
Has the global pandemic changed the way you view or live your life now?
Absolutely. From closing Golightly after 15 years, to moving house, turning 40, and buying a farm with friends — the past few years have brought major shifts. It’s clarified what truly matters, and with our kids in primary school, we’re prioritising joy and balance as a family while growing our work in a way that feels sustainable.
Do you own any sentimental jewellery?
I love fine gold jewellery — a mix of vintage and modern. My wedding ring was my maternal grandmother’s, passed down through my mum. It fits perfectly, no resizing needed. My husband Huw also had a gold bangle made for me. Both are daily staples — meaningful and easy to wear.
What fashion brands do you love?
I’m drawn to simplicity, function and quality. I live in Arket and Uniqlo basics, with special pieces from past clients like Rag & Bone, Ganni, Jac+ Jack and Dion Lee. My long-term dream? To be one of those effortlessly chic older women in Dries Van Noten and Marni.
How do you stay healthy? Any tips?
Routine movement is everything for me — it’s as much for my mind as my body. I’ve also started working with a naturopath and found iron and Ashwagandha have really lifted my mood and energy. I aim for balance, nothing extreme, and think of it as a long-term investment in quality of life.
The beauty staple you’re never without?
Moisturiser — hydration is key for my skin. I also love facial massage and the occasional infrared sauna session.
What is the last thing you purchased and loved?
Land in Mudgee! We bought it with friends and named it Budgee Budgee Farm. It has existing dwellings we’re using as short-term rentals. Our first visit was joyful and now we’re in the fun stage of planning upgrades.
Favourite mid-week dinner treats?
We eat together every night — usually staples with the occasional new recipe to keep things interesting. I love schnitzel with mash, and Julia Ostro’s Japanese short ribs are a new favourite.
Favourite travel destinations?
London for family, Italy and Japan for the food and walking culture. In Australia, we love the South Coast — and now Mudgee! It’s been a joy discovering it since our recent purchase.
What brings you joy on a bad day?
It depends. If I’m overwhelmed, alone time at home — organising and reading — helps reset me. If something’s really upset me, time with Huw or a close friend helps me talk it through. Sunshine, a good walk and a great meal also work wonders.
